Kyle Baublitz

The birds are out, the sun is shining, and I've got spring fever. This all leads to one conclusion, that spring practice is in session. It's the most exciting time of the new year if you are a Penn State fan. It is this time during the year where you start establishing your hopes and dreams for next season; however, it is also the first time you get a glimpse of the truths surrounding your team and your dream starts turning into a reality.

This is indeed your first look at next year's product on the field. The early enrollees are getting their first glimpse at college ball, as next year's recruits are scheduling their visits for Blue and White weekend. This is also the time of the year for classic Penn State fans to develop their critiques for next season, and as the trend goes, begin to start panicking for the first big game of the year, which is defending National Champions Alabama.

The best way to start looking at your team for next year, are the new guys. The guys that are coming in, who are going to be pushing last year's guys for playing time. The guys that are going to increase the level of competition on your team, and contribute to the strengths of the team, and patch up the weak spots. These are the guys that help establish the foundation for the next year and years to come.

The first player we are going to look at this Spring will be early enrollee, Kyle Baublitz. Kyle was a four star recruit out of York, Pennsylvania, who was being recruited to play either the tight end or defensive end position. Kyle's natural body of work includes a 6'4" inch frame, and weighing in at approximately 255 lbs. Now that is a guy who has the build to play on the collegiate level immediately.

As for Kyle, there was speculation as to which position he will play, but with the recent release of Penn State's spring roster, he is listed under the DE position. Kyle not only possesses the framework to play immediately, but he possesses the characteristics to have a immediate impact. Kyle is as tough as they come and possesses a natural nasty streak for the game. He is a blue collar type of player, and the edge he plays with will come in handy replacing the attitude the defense lost with the graduation of Josh Hull.

Kyle also has a great football IQ and knows how to use his hands down in the trenches. He fights off blocks very well, has a great motor in pursuing the quarterback, and plays very consistently. He plays within his limits, but is great at holding his ground while taking on blockers, and creating lanes for the linebackers to make plays, which is very important for Penn State's defensive style of play. Kyle has above average closing speed, great burst off the edge, but could work on his lateral movement in clogging up the lanes in run support.

With a little bit of coaching, and a lot of time to grow into the position, look for Kyle to work his way into a very deep rotation for the defensive line next season. I would not be surprised to see him on the field, wreaking havoc on third downs as a true freshman. But for now, look for him to make a splash during the spring game, just look for number 84.

Next Week: Kevin Haplea
