Weekly Picks: Week 5

Here We Go........

We've got 6 games on the schedule this week, so let's go ahead and get started........

22 Penn State vs. 17 Iowa

Ali's Pick: You already know my pick for this one (http://nittanylionsgo.blogspot.com/2010/09/prime-time-hawkeyes.html), but if Penn State can execute on the ball, limited turnovers, and get to the QB against this young Iowa offensive line, they can truly pull the upset. However, I don't know if I'm completely sold on the odds of that happening, so I got Iowa in a tight one.

Iowa 27 -- 24 Penn State

Matt's Pick: I already gave some thoughts on this on the comment section of Ali's post. I'm going to alter my score a bit due to the news that Derrick Thomas is not playing for psu tonight. That really hurts the nickel defense that PSU uses when teams are in 3 and 4 wide reciever sets.

Iowa 28-- 9 Penn State

11 Wisconsin vs. 24 Michigan State

Ali's Pick: As many people that are calling for this to be a pivotal game for both programs, I just don't know what to expect. The irony in this match-up is that year in, year out, people are picking these two programs to turn the leaf and establish themselves as legitimate contenders in the Big Ten, and as is the case most years they both disappoint. It'll be interesting to see how they fare against each other as both teams love to run the ball. In the end I think Wisconsin's run game will prove to be too much for the Spartans defense, however if it goes into overtime I give the edge to Michigan State.

Wisconsin 27 -- Michigan State 17

Matt's Pick: I think Wisconsin's running game will be too much and wear down the Michigan State defense in the 4th quarter. The passing game of Michigan State will keep this ball game close into the 4th quarter but they will ultimately run out of gas and lose a tight one.

Wisconsin 31-- Michigan State 24

21 Texas vs. 8 Oklahoma

Ali's Pick: While Texas is coming off of a disappointing blow out loss to UCLA, Oklahoma is coming off of a close call of their own against an underachieving Cincinnati program (31-29). One or two plays the other way and this would've been the most bland Red River Rivalry games in the past decade. I just do not buy into the hype of Oklahoma or any of the teams in the Big 12 this year except for Nebraska because it seems as if they are the only team that plays defense in that conference. I also think that Texas, with 3 defensive backs on the Thorpe Award (Goes to the best defensive back in the country every year) Watch List has the talent to slow down Oklahoma's potent offense. In the end, I think a win for Texas flips the script in the Big 12 and creates a nice mess for the rest of the season.

Texas 38 --24 Oklahoma

Matt's Pick: Texas's defense was considered by many the best defense in the country before last weeks shocker. I think the defense will bounce back and show some pride and smother the inconsistent Oklahoma offense. I personally do not like either of these teams and i'm rooting for Texas to remove Oklahoma out of the national title race.

Texas 34--Oklahoma 17

UNRANKED Tennessee vs. 12 LSU

Ali's Pick: While TN is in another rebuilding year, LSU is coming off of another close call against a lowly Big East team in West Virginia. With a looming match-up against Florida in a couple of weeks I think the Vols will catch the Tigers sleeping this week. This will be another week where Jefferson and the Tigers offense continues to struggle (averaging 299.8 yards per game, even PSU with a freshman QB and a "terrible" O-line is averaging 368.8 yards per game), look for former Tigers recruit Janzen Jackson to pull in a couple picks, making it a long day for the Tigers offense. In the end, Patrick Peterson (who has single-handedly won two games for LSU) and his heroics won't be enough as Dooley and the Vols pull off the upset.

Tennessee 24 -- 10 LSU

Matt's Pick: LSU rolls easily here in a rebuilding year for Tenn. This might be Tennessee's worst roster in over 20 years.

LSU 34-- Tennesse 13

9 Stanford vs 4 Oregon

Ali's Pick: Both teams have been fairly tested with competitive early season match-ups, but if Arizona State can drop 31 on this Oregon defense, I don't even want to know what Stanford and Heisman candidate Andrew Luck can do. I look for this to be a much more physical match-up than most are calling for, but still an offensive explosion no both sides of the ball. I don't think homefield advantage will be enough for the Ducks this year, but still look for them to do damage and this to be an exciting game to watch. Even though it could go either way, I'm going with Stanford in this one.

Stanford 41 -- Oregon 27

Matt's Pick: Stanford has changed to a 3-4 defense this year and has been playing well on both sides of the ball. I think that Oregon will really spread the field and force that 3-4 defense to make plays. I don't think that Stanford has the atheletes on defense to keep Oregon's offense at bay, and Stanford doesnt have the fire power on offense to keep up.

Oregon 41 -- Stanford 27 (I liked ali's score but not the teams)

7 Florida vs. 1 Alabama

Ali's Pick: Even though I dislike both of these teams with a passion, I cannot ignore the fact that this will probably be one of the best games to watch this weekend. While both teams are in somewhat of a rebuilding mode (Florida moreso than Bama, and Bama only on defense), I still think this match-up carries a certain edge. I think Bama's experience will benefit them greatly on offense, and I know a lot of people are calling for this to be the toughest match-up for McElroy against Florida's ball-hawking defense (12 ints on the year), but Florida has to stop the run first. Ingram and Richardson both hit the century mark in this one and Bama rolls once again.

Alabama 31 -- 20 Florida

Matt's Pick: Florida will not have enough offensive fire power to exploit the still improving Alabama defense.

Alabama 24-- Florida 17

There you have it, the picks of the week. I know some of you are disappointed to not have any picks from Steve this week, but this is his Bye weekend as he's celebrating his birthday. It will definitely be exciting to see how all these games play out, until Monday, enjoy the games and let us know how you feel about some of the picks.

WE ARE....................
